About Us

Who We Are

Southside Bible Church started as Woden Valley Bible Church in 2003 with a small group of people who were keen to see a new church established in the south of Canberra. By God’s grace we have since planted two more churches in Canberra, and continue to proclaim the message of Jesus.

We are a member congregation of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches.

We are reformed in our theology, contemporary in our Sunday services, and serious about following Jesus faithfully.

Our Mission

In three words: Build, Reach, Make

We seek to Build the Church as a community in love

It takes the whole Body of believers to do the work of the church (Ephesians 4:11-16), not just pastors and elders. As every believer serves another in love, the gospel is clearly put on display (John 13.34-35). Hence, we encourage our members to use their gifts and lovingly serve one another across the church Body. We seek to build a rich community of gospel servants, not ministry consumers.

We seek to Reach People with the Gospel of Grace

Christians gather in church and then scatter to gather others in (1 Peter 2.9). God grows his church, but he graciously uses his people in this endeavour. Hence, we encourage every member in our church to serve in mission, locally and globally.

We seek to Make Disciples who know and obey the Bible

Jesus said to go and make disciples of all nations who not only trust in Jesus, but obey his every command (Matthew 28.18-20). Hence, we are committed to making & maturing disciples who know what he says and also to do it.

What We Believe

The simple answer is that we’re all about Jesus here at Southside Bible Church.

The Jesus revealed to us in the pages of God’s written Word; the Bible.

Our History

Over the years, Southside Bible Church
has met in a variety of different locations, in different suburbs in various forms and under various names.

The one thing that has never changed is our commitment to meaningful preaching and teaching that is Christ-centred, grace-filled and meaningful to our lives.

Our Values

At Southside Bible Church, we hold dear to these 7 values
that guide our ministry and practice:

  • The Bible as God’s supreme authoritative Word

  • Biblical preaching and teaching that is Christ-centred, grace-filled and meaningful to our lives

  • Every Member Mission where every disciple is engaged in local and global mission to reach all nations and cultures with the gospel of Jesus

  • Praying in line with God’s promises in His word

  • Every Member Ministry where every disciple serves Christ’s Body in love

  • Training and supporting every disciple in their service to Christ

  • Gathering weekly as a whole church and in smaller fellowship groups

Who we are NOT

We are a work in progress, and certainly not a perfect church. But we do believe the Lord has given us a fellowship of welcoming, warm, growing Christians who take their faith seriously and want to make a difference in the world for Jesus.

If you are looking for the following characteristics in a church we might not be a good place for you:

  • If you desire preaching that satisfies modern sensitivities.

  • If you desire church to be an entertaining event to attend rather than a God’s family to be part of.

  • If you are not seeking accountability and deep community to help you grow in the Lord.

  • If you want a church that is full of people just like you.

  • If there is a peripheral teaching or practice that is more important to you than the unity of the saints.

  • If you want tradition or preference to be your guide rather than the Bible.

Other Churches

As much as we would love to welcome you to Southside Bible Church, we realise that we may not be the best church for you. We thank God for many other churches in Canberra that faithfully serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Here are some you could consider checking out: They all preach the Gospel of grace, hold firm to the Word of God, and seek after Jesus’ glory.
